If you discover a mistake after filing your return, you may need to amend it. The Internal Revenue Service may correct errors in calculations on a return and may accept tax returns without some forms or schedules, in these cases there is no need to amend your return. However, you must file an amended return if there is a change in your filing status, income, deductions, or credits.

The form 1040X is used to correct a previously filed form 1040 or form 1040NR, the form 1040X can not be electronically filed, the form needs to be mailed to the Internal Revenue Service.

To claim a refund, you must file the form 1040X within 3 years after the date you filed your original return, returns filed before the due date (without regard to extensions) are considered filed on the due date.

A separate form 1040X must be filed for each tax year that needs to be amended, each form must be mailed in a separate envelope, the tax year that is amended must be written at the top of the form 1040X.

The form has three columns:

  • Column A: Shows original figures from the filed return
  • Column C: Shows the correct figures from a new tax returns with correct tax information
  • Column B: Is the difference between Column A and C

There is an area in page 2 of the form 1040X to explain the necessary changes to the original form, and the reason for each change.

We will attach copies of any forms or schedules affected by the change including any form(s) W2. Form(s) 1099 should also be attached if received after the original return filing and there is income tax withheld.

A change made on a federal income tax return may affect may affect your State tax liability, in some cases the State income tax return for that tax year must be modified as well.

Amended returns take up to 16 weeks to process and up to three weeks to show in the Internal Revenue Service for inquiries.
